Hans Urs von Balthasar defines Christian mysticism in his introduction to Adrienne von Spyer’s “Revelation”:
“Christian mysticism does not deal with “religion” or “soul” but with revelation of God in Jesus Christ, communicated through a particular state realized by the Holy Spirit and received by an ecclesial messenger. Prophetic and mystical are so little in opposition (…) that they are simply identical to the origin. This is the only possible starting point for theologically speaking of mysticism. »
